Progeria

Progeria

Progeria or Huntchinson-Gilford Syndrome is an extremely rare genetic disease whose symptoms resemble the aging process manifesting itself early in life. The word progeria was created from the Greek suffixes "pro", meaning "before" or "precocious", and "gēras", "old, aged". Progeria was first identified by Jonathan Hutchinson in 1886 when he described the case of a patient who had congenital absence of hair early in childhood. Later, in 1904, Hastings Gilford analyzed another case with the same characteristics. Due to the analysis of these two researchers it was given the current name of the disease. Since then only about 100 cases have been reported worldwide. This disease is characterized by rapid aging - about 7 times greater than the normal rate - which begins around 18 months of age. The children with this dysfunction live on average, up to 13.4 years and usually die from myocardial infarction.
