The four species of trago, also known as deer-mouse or chevrotain, make up the family Tragulidae. They are small, mysterious creatures found only in the tropical forests of Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. They are the only living members of the Tragulina infraorder. The family was widespread and successful from the Oligocene to the Miocene, but they have hardly changed its shape at all, and are an example of a primitive form of ruminant. They have a tetra-compartmentalized stomach to ferment resistant plants, but the third chamber is poorly developed. They have no horns, but both sexes have enlarged upper canines, those of the male are prominent and sharp, protruding out of the jaw. They have short, thin legs that leave them with little agility, but it also helps them maintain a smaller profile that helps them to bridge the dense foliage of their environment. The largest member of the family is the African water trout, approximately 80 cm long and weighing 10 kg.

As quatro espécies de trágulos, também conhecido como cervo-rato ou chevrotain, compõem a família Tragulidae. Eles são criaturas pequenas, misteriosas, encontrados somente nas florestas tropicais da África, da Índia, e no Sudeste Asiático. São os únicos membros vivos do infraordem Tragulina. A família era difundida e bem sucedida do Oligoceno ao Mioceno, mas quase não alteraram a sua forma neste tempo todo, e são um exemplo de uma forma primitiva de ruminante. Eles possuem um estômago tetra-compartimentado para fermentar plantas resistentes, mas a terceira câmara é mal-desenvolvida. Não têm chifres, mas ambos os sexos possuem os caninos superiores ampliados, os dos macho são proeminentes e afiados, projetando-se para fora da mandíbula. Eles tem as pernas curtas e finas, que os deixam com pouca agilidade, mas ajuda-os também a manter um perfil menor que os ajude a transpor a densa folhagem de seu ambiente. O maior membro da família é o trágulo-aquático da África, aproximadamente com 80 cm de comprimento e 10 quilogramas de peso.
