Elem., 52; Cihac, 56; Pușcariu, Dacor., VIII, 349); cf. ciort, care aparține aceleiași rădăcini. După Edelspacher 12, din rom. provine mag. csirta. Din aceeași familie fac parte ciorsăi; certat, adj. (tăiat), din sl. čertŭ (Pușcariu, Dacor., IV, 680); cest, s. n. (înv., bucată, fragment, crîmpei), din bg. čest (Tiktin).
