Serf

Șerb

Serpent is the name under which the peasant-dependent feudal lord was known in Transylvania between the sixteenth and the eighteenth centuries. The serpents were different from the slaves in that the latter could be bought and sold without any connection to the piece of land, while the serpents changed their masters only when the land they were working in came into the possession of someone else.
