The township (Polish miasteczko, white mestechka, Ukrainian mistechko, czech městys (městečko), lit. miestelis, Latvian miests) is one of the types of settlements, a historically established type of settlement in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, that is, in the territory of the modern Belarus, Lithuania, eastern Latvia, Poland, Ukraine and western Russia. Often meant a settlement with a significant proportion of the Jewish population - a Jewish place (Yiddish שטעטל - shtetl, lit. "town").
