Mezopotamya tanrı panteonundaki en eski tanrıdır ve üç büyük tanrı olan gökyüzü tanrısı Enlil ile su tanrısı Enki ile beraber üçlemenin bir parçasıdır. Sümer’in kral Sargon tarafından Akkadlılar tarafından işgal edilmesinden sonra Akkadlılar tarafından Anu olarak adlandırılmıştır. Üç büyük tanrıdan oluşan üçlemenin ilk figürü olamsına dayanarak, Anu tanrıların ilk kralı ve babası olarak saygı görmüştür. Anu görünür bir şekilde Uruk ile özdeşleşmiştir. Bu şehrin Anu kültünün orijinal merkezi olduğuna inanmamız için çok geçerli sebepler vardır.
