Tabu is a very powerful social ban defined as sacred or untouchable in relation to certain areas of human behavior or certain norms. It was begun to be taken and used by ethnologists from Polynesian languages. It has a contradictory structure, as in the "sacred" objects, and it has two opposite meanings. Both "sacred" and "contaminated" things can be taboo. For example, "polluted" persons should be separated from "sacred" objects. The words used in many dictionaries against "Tabu" also carry two opposite meanings. The separation of patients and measures from the rest of society has been a tradition since the earliest time. Some taboos are for women, sexuality, birth or certain events. Eating a dead rooster in a tattoo, killing a house male animal under the gun of the reis, and so on. Some taboos are temporary, while some are continuous for certain periods. Some cosmic or sacred areas, places where no one dares to approach, like some graves. Today, some traditions unwittingly have come from tablets.

Tabu, insan davranışlarının belli alanları ya da belli normlarla ilişkili olarak kutsal veya dokunulmaz olarak tanımlanmış oldukça güçlü sosyal yasaklara denir. Etnologlar tarafından Polinezya dillerinden alınıp kullanılmaya başlanmıştır. "Kutsal" nesnelerde olduğu gibi çelişkili bir yapısı vardır, iki karşıt anlamı da taşır. Hem "kutsal" hem "kirlenmiş" şeyler tabu olabilirler. Örneğin "kirlenen" kişiler, nesneler "kutsal" olandan ayrı tutulmalıdır. "Tabu" karşılığında birçok dilde kullanılan sözcükler de iki zıt anlamı birden taşırlar. Hastaları ve ölüleri toplumun geri kalanından ayırmak en eski zamandan beri bir gelenektir. Bazı tabular ise kadınlara, cinselliğe, doğuma veya belli olaylara yöneliktir. Dövüşte ölmüş bir horozu yemek, reisi silah altında olan bir evin erkek hayvanını öldürmek vb. Bazı tabular geçici, belli dönemler içinken bazıları süreklidir. Bazı kozmik ya da kutsal sayılan bölgeler, kimsenin yaklaşmaya cesaret edemediği yerler, bazı mezarlar gibi. Bugün farkında olmadan uygulanan bazı gelenekler de tabulardan kaynaklanmıştır.
