La mayoría de los radicales arilo se derivan del benceno, el grupo arilo más simple es el grupo fenilo. Los residuos arilo pueden ocurrir ya sea como un fragmento de una molécula o como un radical libre inestable. Los cationes arilo se forman como intermediarios reactivos reactivos en la eliminación del nitrógeno de las sales de aril-diazonio.Los alcoholes aromáticos se forman durante la llamada ebullición de las sales de aril diazonio. Aryl-Kationen entstehen als reaktionsfreudige Zwischenprodukte bei der Stickstoffabspaltung aus Aryl-Diazoniumsalzen, beim sogenannten Verkochen von Aryl-Diazoniumsalzen bilden sich aromatische Alkohole. Aryl-Anionen treten ebenso als reaktive Zwischenprodukte in organischen Synthesen auf und sind stabiler als Aryl-Kationen. Die Bezeichnung Arylgruppe wird vor allem dann verwendet, wenn man allgemein formuliert und nicht genauer spezifizieren will, um welche aromatische Gruppe es sich handelt. Im Gegensatz zu Arylgruppen wird der Begriff Alkylgruppen verwendet, um einen Rest zu bezeichnen, der nicht aromatisch ist.
