Códice
Un códice es un libro compuesto de varias hojas de papel, vitela, papiro o similar, con contenido escrito a mano, normalmente apiladas y encuadernadas fijando un borde y con capas más gruesas que las láminas, pero a veces continuas y plegadas -estilo. La alternativa al formato paginado del códice para un documento largo es el desplazamiento continuo. Ejemplos de códices doblados son los códices mayas. A veces el término se utiliza para un formato de estilo libro, incluyendo libros impresos modernos, pero excluyendo libros plegados. Desarrollado por los romanos a partir de tablillas de madera de escritura, su reemplazo gradual del rollo, la forma dominante de libro en el mundo antiguo, se ha denominado el avance más importante en la historia del libro antes de la invención de la impresión. El códice transformó la forma misma del libro y ofreció una forma que duró siglos. La difusión del códice suele asociarse con el surgimiento del cristianismo, que adoptó el formato de la Biblia desde el principio.
