Compost
El compost es materia orgánica que se ha descompuesto y reciclado como fertilizante y enmienda del suelo. El compost es un ingrediente clave en la agricultura orgánica. En el nivel más simple, el proceso de compostaje simplemente requiere hacer un montón de materia orgánica mojada conocida como vertedero verde y esperar a que los materiales se descompongan en humus después de un período de semanas o meses. El compostaje moderno y metódico es un proceso de múltiples etapas, monitoreado de cerca, con insumos medidos de agua, aire y materiales ricos en carbono y nitrógeno. El proceso de la descomposición se ayuda rasgando la materia de la planta, agregando el agua y asegurando la aireación apropiada girando regularmente la mezcla. Los gusanos y los hongos rompen el material. Las bacterias y los hongos aerobios manejan el proceso químico convirtiendo las entradas en calor, dióxido de carbono y amonio. El amonio es la forma de nitrógeno utilizado por las plantas. Cuando está disponible el amonio no es utilizado por las plantas que es convertido más adelante por las bacterias en los nitratos con el proceso de la nitrificación. El compost puede ser rico en nutrientes. Se utiliza en jardines, paisajismo, horticultura y agricultura.
