Externalismo
El externalismo es un grupo de posiciones en la filosofía de la mente que sostienen que la mente no es sólo el resultado de lo que está sucediendo dentro del sistema nervioso sino también de lo que ocurre o existe fuera del sujeto. A menudo se contrasta con el internalismo que sostiene que la mente emerge de la actividad neuronal sola. El externalismo articula la creencia de que la mente no es sólo el cerebro o lo que hace el cerebro. Existen diferentes versiones del externalismo basadas tanto en la fuerza de la relación como en lo que la mente se considera que es. El externalismo subraya la importancia de factores externos al sistema nervioso. En un extremo, la mente podría depender de factores externos. En el extremo opuesto, la mente depende necesariamente de factores externos. La forma más extrema de externalismo sostiene que la mente está constituida o idéntica a procesos físicos parcial o totalmente externos al sistema nervioso. Otro criterio importante es qué aspecto de la mente se aborda.
