Alternativamente, se puede emplear la aceleración mediante la generación de campos electromagnéticos, en cuyo caso se puede prescindir del tubo y se sustituye un carril de guía. Los primeros dispositivos identificados como armas de fuego aparecieron en China alrededor de 1000 D, y en el siglo XII la tecnología se estaba extendiendo por el resto de Asia, y en Europa por el siglo XIII.
