Las Islas Marianas son un archipiélago en forma de arco compuesta por las cumbres de quince montañas volcánicas en el Océano Pacífico noroccidental entre los paralelos 12 y 21 al norte ya lo largo del meridiano 145 este. Están al sur de Japón y al norte de Nueva Guinea, y forman el límite oriental del Mar de Filipinas. Las islas fueron nombradas después de la reina española Mariana de Austria en el siglo XVII, cuando España comenzó la colonización del archipiélago. Forman la parte norte de la subregión del Pacífico occidental de Micronesia y están compuestas por dos jurisdicciones de los Estados Unidos: la Comunidad de las Islas Marianas del Norte y, al extremo sur de la cadena de islas, el territorio de Guam. Las islas son parte de una estructura geológica conocida como el sistema Izu-Bonin-Mariana Arc, y varían en edad de 5 millones de años en el norte a 30 millones de años en el sur. La cadena de la isla surge como resultado de que el borde occidental de la placa del Pacífico se mueve hacia el oeste y se hunde hacia abajo debajo de la placa de Mariana, una región que es la frontera de la placa convergente más volcánicamente activa en la Tierra.
