Maronitas
Los Maronitas son un grupo etnoreligioso en el Levante. Deriva su nombre del sirio sir Maron cuyos seguidores se trasladaron al Monte Líbano desde el norte de Siria, estableciendo el núcleo de la Iglesia Maronita. Los maronitas fueron capaces de mantener un estatus independiente en el Monte Líbano y su litoral después de la conquista islámica árabe, manteniendo su religión y su idioma hasta el siglo XIII. Los restos de su lengua existen en Chipre y antes en algunos pueblos de montaña aislados, que han adoptado desde entonces el árabe debido a la estandarización del gobierno. La Iglesia Maronita está en comunión con la Iglesia de Roma. El monte turco Otomano Mutasarrifate y más tarde la República del Líbano fueron creados bajo el auspicio de las potencias europeas con los maronitas como su principal componente étnico. La emigración masiva a las Américas a principios del siglo XX y la guerra civil libanesa entre 1975 y 1990 disminuyeron considerablemente en el Levante. Los maronitas forman hoy más de un cuarto de la población total en el país del Líbano. Con sólo dos excepciones, todos los presidentes libaneses y libaneses mayores han sido maronitas.
