Controversia de Marprelate
La polémica de Marprelate fue una guerra de folletos llevados a cabo en Inglaterra y Gales en 1588 y 1589, entre un escritor puritano que empleó el seudónimo Martin Marprelate y defensores de la Iglesia establecida. Los tractos de Martín se caracterizan por una invectiva violenta y personal contra los dignatarios anglicanos, suponiendo que el escritor tenía numerosos y poderosos adherentes y fue capaz de hacer cumplir sus demandas de reforma, y por un estilo sencillo y hogareño combinado con ingenio punzante. Mientras mantenía las doctrinas puritanas como un todo, el punto especial de su ataque fue el Episcopado. Los folletos fueron impresos en una prensa secreta establecida por John Penry, un puritano galés, con la ayuda del impresor Robert Waldegrave, sobre el verano de 1588, para el tema de la literatura puritana prohibida por las autoridades. El primer tramo de "Martin Marprelate", conocido como la Epístola, fue impreso en la casa de la señora Crane en East Molesey en octubre de 1588.
