En un intento por adelantarse a ser expulsado, una figura pública LGBT puede decidir salir públicamente primero, aunque controlar las condiciones bajo las cuales se revela la identidad LGBT es sólo uno de los numerosos motivos para salir. El término "excursión" también puede usarse para referirse a la divulgación de otro tipo de información que podría considerarse privada, como las creencias religiosas de las minorías, por ejemplo revelándose como ateo en una comunidad fuertemente cristiana. En la cultura del hacktivismo, la práctica de sacar información privada se llama doxing.
