Penitencia
La penitencia es el arrepentimiento de los pecados, así como el nombre propio del católico, el cristiano ortodoxo y el sacramento anglicano de la penitencia y la reconciliación. También desempeña un papel en la confesión no sacramental entre los luteranos y otros protestantes. La palabra penitencia deriva del francés antiguo y poenitentia latino, los cuales derivan de la misma raíz que significa arrepentimiento, el deseo de ser perdonado. La penitencia y el arrepentimiento, similares en su derivación y sentido original, han llegado a simbolizar puntos de vista contradictorios de la esencia del arrepentimiento, que surgen de la controversia en cuanto a los méritos respectivos de la "fe" y las "buenas obras".
