Una mascota es un animal que se mantiene principalmente para la compañía o protección de una persona, en contraposición con los animales de trabajo, los animales de deporte, el ganado y los animales de laboratorio, que se mantienen principalmente para el rendimiento, el valor agrícola o la investigación. Las mascotas más populares se destacan por sus atractivas apariencias y sus personalidades leales o juguetonas. Las mascotas suelen proporcionar a sus propietarios beneficios físicos y emocionales. Caminar un perro puede suministrar tanto al ser humano como a los animales domésticos con ejercicio, aire fresco e interacción social.
