En lógica, un argumento requiere un conjunto de dos oraciones declarativas conocidas como premisas junto con otra oración declarativa conocida como conclusión. Esta estructura de dos premisas y una conclusión forma la estructura argumentativa básica. Argumentos más complejos pueden usar una serie de reglas para conectar varias premisas a una conclusión, o para derivar una serie de conclusiones de las premisas originales que luego actúan como premisas para conclusiones adicionales. Un ejemplo de esto es el uso de las reglas de inferencia encontradas dentro de la lógica simbólica. Aristóteles sostuvo que cualquier argumento lógico podría reducirse a dos premisas y una conclusión. Los locales a veces se dejan sin declarar, en cuyo caso se llaman premisas faltantes, por ejemplo: Sócrates es mortal porque todos los hombres son mortales. Es evidente que una afirmación tácitamente entendida es que Sócrates es un hombre. El razonamiento plenamente expresado es así: Debido a que todos los hombres son mortales y Sócrates es un hombre, Sócrates es mortal.
