Las salamandras son cualquiera de las aproximadamente 655 existencias y todas las especies extintas de anfibios dentro del orden Caudata. Las especies actuales se agrupan a menudo bajo el término Urodela. Por lo general, se caracterizan por una apariencia superficial de lagarto, con cuerpos delgados, hocicos romos, extremidades cortas que se proyectan en ángulo recto con el cuerpo y la presencia de una cola tanto en larvas como en adultos. Las salamandras están casi totalmente restringidas al hemisferio norte y se encuentran en la ecozona holárctica con algunas especies presentes en la zona neotropical. Las salamandras nunca tienen más de cuatro dedos en sus patas delanteras y cinco en sus patas traseras, pero algunas especies tienen menos dígitos y otras carecen de miembros posteriores. Su piel permeable suele hacer que dependen de los hábitats en o cerca del agua u otros lugares fríos y húmedos. Algunas especies de salamandra son completamente acuáticas a lo largo de su vida, algunas toman al agua intermitentemente y otras son enteramente terrestres como adultos. Único entre los vertebrados, son capaces de regenerar los miembros perdidos, así como otras partes dañadas del cuerpo.
