Un rascacielos es un edificio alto, habitable continuamente de muchos pisos, diseñado generalmente para el uso de la oficina, comercial y residencial. No hay una definición oficial ni una altura por encima de la cual un edificio pueda ser clasificado como un rascacielos y en qué altura ya no puede ser considerado como un rascacielos. Para edificios de más de 300 m de altura, se puede utilizar el término Supertall, los rascacielos que alcanzan más de 600 m se clasifican como Megatall. Una característica común de los rascacielos es tener una estructura de acero que apoya las paredes de cortina. Estas paredes de cortina o bien se apoyan sobre el bastidor inferior o están posiblemente suspendidas del bastidor superior, en lugar de paredes portantes de construcción convencional. Algunos primeros rascacielos tienen un marco de acero que permite la construcción de muros de carga más altos que los de hormigón armado. Los muros de los rascacielos modernos no son portadores de carga y la mayoría de los rascacielos se caracterizan por grandes superficies de ventanas posibles gracias al concepto de marco de acero y muros cortina. Sin embargo, los rascacielos pueden tener muros cortina que imitan paredes convencionales y una pequeña superficie de ventanas.

There is no official definition or height above which a building may be classified as a skyscraper and at which height it may not be considered a high-rise anymore. For buildings above a height of 300 m, the term Supertall can be used, skyscrapers reaching beyond 600 m are classified as Megatall. One common feature of skyscrapers is having a steel framework that supports curtain walls. These curtain walls either bear on the framework below or are possibly suspended from the framework above, rather than load-bearing walls of conventional construction. Some early skyscrapers have a steel frame that enables the construction of load-bearing walls taller than of those made of reinforced concrete. Modern skyscrapers' walls are not load-bearing and most skyscrapers are characterized by large surface areas of windows made possible by the concept of steel frame and curtain walls. However, skyscrapers can have curtain walls that mimic conventional walls and a small surface area of windows.
