La palabra espástica se utiliza de forma diferente dependiendo de la ubicación geográfica de su uso y la versión del idioma inglés en uso allí, lo que ha conducido a una cierta controversia y malentendido de la naturaleza y la adecuación de la palabra. Derivada a través del latín de los spastikos griegos, la palabra en su raíz todavía se refiere a una alteración en el tono muscular afectada por la espasticidad de la condición médica, que se ve en la diplegia espástica y muchas otras formas de parálisis cerebral y también en términos como "colon espástico ".
