En los problemas de división justa, el rencor es un fenómeno que ocurre cuando el valor de una asignación de un jugador disminuye cuando aumenta la valoración de uno o más jugadores. Por lo tanto, en igualdad de condiciones, un jugador que exhibe rencor preferirá una asignación en la que otros jugadores reciben menos que más. En este lenguaje, el rencor es difícil de analizar porque uno tiene que evaluar dos conjuntos de preferencias. Por ejemplo, en el método de dividir y escoger, un jugador malicioso tendría que hacer un trade-off entre privar a su oponente de la torta, y conseguir más sí mismo. Dentro del campo de la evolución social, se emplea el desprecio para describir aquellos comportamientos sociales que tienen un impacto negativo tanto en el actor como en el receptor. El rencor puede ser favorecido por la selección de parentesco cuando: conduce a un beneficio indirecto a algún tercero que está suficientemente relacionado con el actor; O cuando se dirige principalmente a individuos relacionados negativamente. La relación negativa ocurre cuando dos individuos están menos relacionados que el promedio.
