En fonología, la tensión es una cualidad vocal particular que es fonológicamente contrastiva en muchos idiomas, incluyendo el inglés, en el cual la lengua se coloca cerca del techo de la boca. También se ha utilizado ocasionalmente para describir contrastes en consonantes. A diferencia de la mayoría de las características distintivas, la característica se puede interpretar solamente relativamente, es decir, en un lenguaje como el inglés que contrasta y, el anterior se puede describir como una vocal tensa mientras que el último es una vocal laxa. Otro ejemplo es vietnamita, donde las letras ă y represent representan vocales laxas, y las letras a y ơ las vocales tensa correspondientes. Algunas lenguas como el español a menudo se consideran como tener sólo vocales tensa, pero como la calidad de la tensión no es una característica fonémica en este lenguaje, no se puede aplicar para describir sus vocales de manera significativa.
