विशेष— यह पौधा भारत के प्रायः सभी स्थानों में और
विशेषतः उत्तर भारत में इन्हीं पत्तियों के लिये बोया जाता
है । नेपाल की तराई में कहीं कहीं यह आपसे आप और
जगली भी होता है । पर जंगली पौधे की पत्तियाँ विशेष
मादक नहीं होतीं; और इसीलिये उस पौधे का कोई उपयोग
भी नहीं होता । पौधा प्रायः तीन हाथ ऊँचा होता है और
पत्तियाँ किनारों पर कटावदार होती है । इस पौधे के स्त्री,
पुरुष और उभवलिंग तीन भेद हैं । स्त्री बौधों की पत्तियाँ ही
बहुधा पीसकर पीने के काम में आती हैं । पर कभी कभी
पुरुष पौधे की पत्तियाँ भी इस काम में आती हैं । इसकी
पत्तियाँ उपयुक्त समय पर उतार ली जाती है; क्योंकि यदी
यह पत्तियाँ उतारी न जायँ और पौधे पर ही रहकर सूखकर पीली बड़ जायँ, तो फिर उनकी मादकता और साथ
साथ उपयोगिता भी जाती रहती है । भारत के प्रायः सभी
स्थानों में लोग इसकी पत्तियों को पीस और छानकर नशे के लिये पीते हैं । प्रायः इसके साथ बादाम आदि कई मसाले
को मिला दिए जाते हैं । वैद्यक में इसे कफनाशक, ग्राहक,
पाचक, तीक्ष्ण, गरप्र, पित्तजनक, बलवर्धक, मेधाजनक,
रसायन, रुचिकारक, मलावरोधक और निद्राजनक माना
गया है ।
मुहा०—भाँग छानना = भाँग की पत्तियों को पीस और छानकर
/?/ । भाँग खा जाना या पी जाना = नशे की सी बातें करना । नासमझी की या पागलपन की बातें
करना । घर में भूजी भाँग न होना । =अत्यंत दरिद्र होना ।
