Torii - puerta con forma característica, que conduce a las capillas y lugares sagrados shinto. Torii es también un elemento ampliamente reconocido de la arquitectura japonesa. Es una estructura cuya forma básica consiste en dos polos conectados en la parte superior con dos vigas transversales. Torii simboliza la transición del "mundo finito" - el mundo terrenal físico, cuyo final es la muerte, al "mundo infinito" que es el mundo de los kami. Torii es donde puedes vivir con kami, por lo que no son poco comunes en el agua, en las rocas costeras o en el jardín del patio trasero, en lugares especiales del shinto. La puerta torii más grande se encuentra en el santuario de Itsukushima en la isla de Miyajima y se eleva a más de 16 metros.

Torii symbolizuje przejście od „świata skończonego” – fizycznego świata ziemskiego, którego końcem jest śmierć, do „świata nieskończonego” będącego światem kami. Torii jest stawiane tam, gdzie może mieszkać kami, a więc nie są rzadkością torii stojące w wodzie, na przybrzeżnych skałach lub w przydomowym ogrodzie – w miejscach szczególnych dla shintō. Największa brama torii znajduje się w chramie Itsukushima na wyspie Miyajima i wznosi się na ponad 16 metrów.
