Tabu es una prohibición social muy poderosa definida como sagrada o intocable en relación con ciertas áreas del comportamiento humano o ciertas normas. Se comenzó a tomar y usar por etnólogos de las lenguas polinesias. Tiene una estructura contradictoria, como lo es en los objetos "sagrados", dos significados opuestos. Ambas cosas "sagradas" y "contaminadas" pueden ser tabú. Por ejemplo, las personas "contaminadas" deben separarse de los objetos "sagrados". Las palabras usadas en muchos diccionarios contra "Tabu" también tienen dos significados opuestos. La separación de pacientes y medidas del resto de la sociedad ha sido una tradición desde los primeros tiempos. Algunos tabús son para mujeres, sexualidad, nacimiento o ciertos eventos. Comer un gallo muerto en un tatuaje, matar a un animal doméstico bajo el arma del reis, y así sucesivamente. Algunos tabúes son temporales, mientras que algunos son continuos durante ciertos períodos. Algunas áreas cósmicas o sagradas, lugares donde nadie se atreve a acercarse, como algunas tumbas. Hoy, sin saberlo, algunas tradiciones han venido de las tabletas.
