La lumière de l'après-nuit ou de l'après-nuit indique un éclairage faible des couches atmosphériques supérieures. Il a été découvert par Anders Ångström en 1868. La luminosité résiduelle d'une réflexion sans lune ne résulte pas uniquement de sources lumineuses artificielles au sol, de la diffusion indirecte de la lumière du soleil et de la lumière des étoiles, mais aussi des processus de l'ionosphère. Les atomes de gaz et les molécules de cette couche sont ionisés et dissociés par le rayonnement ultraviolet solaire. Dans la recombinaison des particules, le rayonnement est émis dans la région visible, qui se poursuit jusqu'à après le coucher du soleil. La lumière générée par ce processus pendant la journée est beaucoup plus intense que la lumière nocturne, mais elle est éclipsée par la lumière du soleil. De l'extérieur de l'atmosphère terrestre, l'Airglow apparaît comme un anneau lumineux à une hauteur d'environ 90-500 km au-dessus de la surface de la terre, une bande verte domine à 90 à 100 km d'altitude. En raison des changements de densité dus aux ondes de gravité, cela peut être observé sous la forme de bandes individuelles.

Das Nachthimmellicht oder Nachthimmelsleuchten bezeichnet ein schwaches Leuchten höherer Atmosphärenschichten. Es wurde 1868 von Anders Ångström entdeckt. Die Resthelligkeit eines mondlosen Nachthimmels resultiert nicht allein aus künstlichen Lichtquellen am Boden, der indirekten Streuung von Sonnenlicht und dem Licht der Sterne, sondern auch aus Prozessen in der Ionosphäre. Die Gasatome und -moleküle in dieser Schicht werden durch die solare Ultraviolettstrahlung ionisiert und dissoziiert. Bei der Rekombination der Teilchen wird Strahlung im sichtbaren Bereich ausgesandt, die noch bis lange nach Sonnenuntergang anhält. Das bei Tag durch diesen Prozess entstehende Licht ist wesentlich intensiver als das nächtliche, wird jedoch durch das Licht der Sonne überstrahlt. Von außerhalb der Erdatmosphäre erscheint das Airglow als leuchtende Ringe in einer Höhe von ca. 90–500 km über der Erdoberfläche, wobei vor allem ein grünes Band in 90 bis 100 km Höhe dominiert. Wegen Dichteänderungen aufgrund von Schwerewellen lässt sich dieses in Form einzelner Bänder beobachten.
