L'acide alginique, également appelé algin ou alginate, est un polysaccharide anionique distribué largement dans les parois cellulaires des algues brunes, où, par liaison avec l'eau, il forme une gomme visqueuse. Sous forme extraite, il absorbe l'eau rapidement; Il est capable d'absorber 200 à 300 fois son propre poids dans l'eau. Sa couleur varie du blanc au brun jaunâtre.
