La mouche de la pomme, également connue sous le nom de ver de chemin de fer, est un parasite de plusieurs fruits, principalement des pommes. Avant l'arrivée des pommes d'Europe, on l'a retrouvé principalement dans les aubépines. La forme adulte de cet insecte mesure environ 5 mm de long, légèrement plus petite qu'une mouche domestique, avec un point blanc sur son thorax et une bande noire caractéristique en forme de "F" sur ses ailes. Lorsqu'il est menacé, il tourne ses ailes de 90 degrés et les déplace vers le haut et vers le bas tout en marchant de côté; La combinaison imite l'apparence d'une araignée en raison du motif d'aile dans la nouvelle position apparaissant comme des jambes supplémentaires. La larve, qui est le stade du cycle de vie de cet insecte qui cause le dommage réel au fruit, est similaire à une larve ou à une mouche typique de la mouche.
