L'excitation est un état physiologique et psychologique d'être éveillé ou réactif aux stimuli. Il implique l'activation du système d'activation réticulaire dans le tronc cérébral, le système nerveux autonome et le système endocrinien, ce qui entraîne une augmentation de la fréquence cardiaque et de la tension artérielle et une condition de vigilance sensorielle, de mobilité et de préparation à la réponse. Il existe de nombreux systèmes neuronaux différents impliqués dans ce que l'on appelle collectivement le système d'éveil. Cinq systèmes principaux issus du tronc cérébral, avec des liaisons s'étendant à travers le cortex, sont basés sur les neurotransmetteurs du cerveau, l'acétylcholine, la norepinephrine, la dopamine, l'histamine et la sérotonine. Lorsque ces systèmes sont stimulés, ils produisent une activité corticale et une vigilance. Le système noradrénergique est un faisceau d'axones qui proviennent du locus coeruleus et s'élève dans le néocortex, le système limbique et le cerveau antérieur basal. La plupart des neurones sont projetés dans le cortex postérieur qui est important avec l'information sensorielle et la vigilance. L'activation du locus coeruleus et la libération de norepinephrine provoque l'éveil et augmente la vigilance.
