L'atavisme est la tendance à revenir au type ancestral. En biologie, un atavisme est un retour évolutif, comme des traits réapparaissant qui avaient déjà disparu des générations. Atavisms peut se produire de plusieurs façons. L'une des façons est que les gènes pour les caractéristiques phénotypiques précédemment existantes sont conservés dans l'ADN, et ceux-ci s'expriment par une mutation qui supprime les gènes supérieurs pour les nouveaux traits ou que les traits anciens dépassent le nouveau. Un certain nombre de traits peuvent varier en raison du raccourcissement du développement foetal d'un trait ou d'un prolongement de celui-ci. Dans un tel cas, un changement dans le temps où un trait est permis de se développer avant qu'il ne soit fixé peut engendrer un phénotype ancestral. Dans les sciences sociales, l'atavisme est une tendance culturelle - par exemple, les gens à l'ère moderne reviennent aux façons de penser et d'agir d'autrefois. Le mot atavisme dérive du latin atavus. Un atavus est un grand-arrière-arrière-grand-père ou, plus généralement, un ancêtre.
