Aung San Suu Kyi AC est un politicien de l'opposition birmane et président de la Ligue nationale pour la démocratie en Birmanie. Aux élections générales de 1990, la LND a remporté 59% des voix nationales et 81% des sièges au Parlement. Elle avait cependant déjà été détenue en résidence surveillée avant les élections. Elle est restée en résidence surveillée en Birmanie pendant près de 15 des 21 années du 20 juillet 1989 jusqu'à sa dernière publication le 13 novembre 2010, devenant l'un des prisonniers politiques les plus en vue au monde. Suu Kyi a reçu le prix Rafto et le prix Sakharov pour la liberté de pensée en 1990 et le prix Nobel de la paix en 1991. En 1992, elle a reçu le prix Jawaharlal Nehru pour la compréhension internationale par le gouvernement de l'Inde et le prix international Simón Bolívar du gouvernement Du Venezuela. En 2007, le gouvernement du Canada l'a fait citoyen d'honneur de ce pays, la quatrième personne à recevoir l'honneur. En 2011, elle a reçu la médaille Wallenberg. Le 19 septembre 2012, Aung San Suu Kyi a également reçu la médaille d'or du Congrès, qui est, avec la Médaille présidentielle de la liberté, le plus haut honneur civil aux États-Unis.
