Lorsque l'air monte au-dessus d'une chaîne de montagnes, il refroidit et libère de l'humidité sur la pente du vent. Comme l'air est tiré de l'autre côté, il est comprimé et chauffé par un chauffage adiabatique, et il chauffe et sèche le territoire dans l'ombre de pluie de la montagne.
