Bede
Bede, également connu sous le nom de Saint-Bede ou le Vénérable Bede, était un moine anglais au monastère de Saint-Pierre à Monkwearmouth et son monastère compagnon, Saint Paul's, dans le vieux Jarrow, dans le nord-est de l'Angleterre, tous deux situés dans le Royaume de Northumbria . Il est bien connu comme auteur et érudit, et son travail le plus célèbre, Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum lui a valu le titre «Le père de l'histoire anglaise». En 1899, Bede fut nommé docteur de l'église par Léon XIII, position de signification théologique; Il est le seul originaire de Grande-Bretagne à réaliser cette désignation. Bede était en outre un linguiste qualifié et un traducteur, et son travail a rendu les écrits latins et grecs des premiers pères de l'Église beaucoup plus accessibles à ses collègues anglo-saxons, contribuant de manière significative au christianisme anglais. Le monastère de Bede avait accès à une superbe bibliothèque comprenant des œuvres d'Eusèbe et d'Orosius, parmi d'autres.
