Cette expression reflète les méthodes de Lorenz pour traiter les patients avec des techniques non invasives. Sa pratique médicale était une conséquence de sa sévère allergie à l'acide carbolique couramment utilisé dans les salles d'opération de l'époque. Son état l'obligeait à devenir un «chirurgien sec». L'utilisation contemporaine de la chirurgie sans sang fait référence à la fois aux techniques et aux protocoles médicaux invasifs et non invasifs. La phrase est quelque peu confuse.
