Le Torpor est un état d'activité physiologique diminuée chez un animal, généralement par une diminution de la température corporelle et du taux métabolique. Torpor permet aux animaux de survivre à des périodes de disponibilité alimentaire réduite. Un combat de torporte peut se référer à la période pendant laquelle un hibernateur passe à basse température corporelle, de quelques jours à plusieurs semaines, ou il peut se référer à une période de faible température corporelle et un métabolisme de moins de 24 heures, comme dans la «torpeur quotidien». Les animaux qui subissent une torpeur quotidien comprennent les oiseaux et certains mammifères, y compris de nombreuses espèces de marsupiales et d'espèces de rongeurs comme les souris et les chauves-souris. Pendant la partie active de leur journée, ces animaux maintiennent la température et les niveaux d'activité normales du corps, mais leur taux métabolique et leur température corporelle diminuent pendant une partie de la journée pour conserver l'énergie. Le Torpor est souvent utilisé pour aider les animaux à survivre pendant les périodes de températures plus froides, car ils leur permettent de conserver l'énergie qui serait normalement utilisée pour maintenir une température corporelle élevée.
