Baleine Bowhead
La baleine boréale est une espèce de la famille des baleines noires Balaenidae, dans le sous-ordre Mysticeti et le genre Balaena. Une baleine de couleur noire dépourvue d'une nageoire dorsale, elle peut atteindre 20 m de longueur. Cette espèce à corps épais peut peser 75 tonnes à 100 tonnes, ce qui se limite à la baleine bleue, bien que la longueur maximale de la tête noelle soit inférieure à plusieurs autres baleines. Il vit entièrement dans les eaux arctiques et sous-arctiques fertiles, contrairement aux autres baleines qui migrent pour se nourrir ou se reproduire dans des eaux de basse latitude. On l'appelait aussi la baleine noire du Groenland ou la baleine arctique. Les baleiniers américains l'appelaient le steeple-top, la baleine polaire ou la Russie ou la baleine russe. L'obésité a la plus grande bouche de tout animal. L'obéissance était une cible baleinière précoce. Sa population a été considérablement réduite avant un moratoire de 1966. La population est estimée à plus de 24 900 dans le monde, contre environ 50 000 avant la chasse à la baleine.
