Catherine de Médicis
Catherine de Médicis, fille de Lorenzo II de Medici et de Madeleine de La Tour d'Auvergne, était une noble italienne reine de France de 1547 à 1559, en tant que femme du roi Henri II. En tant que mère de trois fils qui sont devenus des rois de France au cours de sa vie, elle a eu une influence étendue, parfois variable, dans la vie politique de la France. Pendant un certain temps, elle a gouverné la France comme son régent. En 1533, à l'âge de quatorze ans, Caterina épousa Henri, deuxième fils du roi François Ier et la reine Claude de France. Sous la version gallicisée de son nom, Catherine de Médicis, elle était la Reine Consort de France en tant que femme du roi Henri II de France de 1547 à 1559. Tout au long de son règne, Henry a exclu Catherine de participer aux affaires de l'Etat et a pris des faveurs sur son Maîtresse principale, Diane de Poitiers, qui exerçait beaucoup d'influence sur lui. La mort de Henry poussa Catherine dans l'arène politique en tant que mère du frêle roi François II, âgé de quinze ans. Quand il est mort en 1560, elle est devenue régente au nom de son fils de dix ans, le roi Charles IX, et a reçu des pouvoirs radicaux.
