Un codex est un livre composé de plusieurs feuilles de papier, de vélin, de papyrus ou similaires, avec un contenu écrit à la main, généralement empilés et liés par la fixation d'un bord et avec des couvertures plus épaisses que les feuilles, mais parfois une accordéon continue et pliée -style. L'alternative au format de codex paginé pour un document long est le défilement continu. Des exemples de codages repliés sont les codages maya. Parfois, le terme est utilisé pour un format de style livre, y compris des livres imprimés modernes mais à l'exclusion des livres pliés. Développé par les Romains à partir de tablettes d'écriture en bois, le remplacement progressif du rouleau, la forme dominante du livre dans le monde antique, a été qualifié d'avance majeure dans l'histoire du livre avant l'invention de l'impression. Le codex a complètement transformé la forme du livre lui-même et a offert une forme qui a duré des siècles. La propagation du codex est souvent associée à la montée du christianisme, qui a adopté le format pour la Bible dès le début.
