Compost
Le compost est une matière organique qui a été décomposée et recyclée en tant qu'agricole et amendement du sol. Le compost est un ingrédient clé de l'agriculture biologique. Au niveau le plus simple, le processus de compostage nécessite simplement de faire un tas de matière organique mouillée connue sous le nom de déchets verts et d'attendre que les matériaux se décomposent en humus après des semaines ou des mois. Le compostage méthodique moderne est un procédé à étapes multiples et surveillées avec des intrants mesurés d'eau, d'air et de matériaux riches en carbone et en azote. Le processus de décomposition est aidé par le déchiquetage de la matière végétale, l'ajout d'eau et l'assurer une aération adéquate en tournant régulièrement le mélange. Les vers et les champignons complètent le matériel. Les bactéries et les champignons aérobies gèrent le processus chimique en convertissant les intrants en chaleur, dioxyde de carbone et ammonium. L'ammonium est la forme d'azote utilisée par les plantes. Lorsque l'ammonium n'est pas utilisé par les plantes, il est encore converti par des bactéries dans des nitrates par voie de nitrification. Le compost peut être riche en nutriments. Il est utilisé dans les jardins, l'aménagement paysager, l'horticulture et l'agriculture.
