Concrétion
Une concrétion est une masse dure et compacte de roches sédimentaires formée par la précipitation du ciment minéral dans les espaces entre les grains de sédiments. Les concrétions sont souvent ovales ou sphériques, bien que des formes irrégulières se produisent également. Le mot «concrétisation» est dérivé du latin signifiant «ensemble» et croissant qui signifie «grandir». Les formes de béton se forment sous des couches de strates sédimentaires déjà déposées. Ils se forment généralement au début de l'histoire funéraire des sédiments, avant que le reste du sédiment soit durci dans la roche. Ce ciment concrétif rend souvent la concrétion plus difficile et plus résistante aux intempéries que la strate de l'hôte. Il existe une distinction importante à faire entre les concrétions et les nodules. Les concrétions sont formées à partir de précipitations minérales autour d'une sorte de noyau tandis qu'un nodule est un corps de remplacement. Les descriptions datant du 18ème siècle attestent que les concrétions ont longtemps été considérées comme des curiosités géologiques. En raison de la variété des formes, des tailles et des compositions inhabituelles, les concrétions ont été interprétées comme des œufs de dinosaures, des fossiles d'animaux et de plantes, des débris extraterrestres ou des objets humains.
