Pinophyta
Les conifères, la division Pinophyta, également connue sous le nom de division Coniferophyta ou Coniferae, sont l'un des 12 taxons de division existants dans le Royaume Plantae et 10 dans les plantes terrestres existantes. Les pinophytes sont des gymnospermes, des plantes à graminées portant des tissus vasculaires. Tous les conifères existants sont des plantes ligneuses, la grande majorité étant des arbres avec seulement quelques arbustes. Des exemples typiques de conifères comprennent les cèdres, les sapins Douglas, les cyprès, les sapins, les genévriers, les kauri, les mélèzes, les pins, les hémisphères, les séquoias, les épicéas et les if. La division comprend environ huit familles, 68 genres et 630 espèces vivantes. Bien que le nombre total d'espèces soit relativement faible, les conifères sont d'une importance écologique immense. Ce sont les plantes dominantes sur d'énormes terres, notamment les forêts boréales de l'hémisphère nord, mais aussi dans des climats frais similaires dans les montagnes plus au sud. Les conifères boréaux ont de nombreuses adaptations hivernales. La forme conique étroite des conifères du nord, et leurs membres descendants, les aident à verser de la neige. Beaucoup d'entre eux modifient de façon saisonnière leur biochimie pour les rendre plus résistants au gel, appelés «durcissement».
