Deutérium
Le deutérium est l'un des deux isotopes stables de l'hydrogène. Il a une abondance naturelle dans les océans de la Terre d'environ un atome en 6 420 d'hydrogène. Ainsi, le deutérium représente environ 0,0156% de l'hydrogène naturel dans les océans, tandis que l'isotope le plus courant représente plus de 99,98%. L'abondance du deutérium change légèrement d'un type d'eau naturelle à l'autre. Le noyau de deutérium, appelé deuteron, contient un proton et un neutron, alors que l'isotope d'hydrogène beaucoup plus commun, le protium, n'a pas de neutron dans le noyau. Le nom de l'isotope du deutérium est formé à partir des deuteros grecs signifiant "second", pour désigner les deux particules composant le noyau. Le déterium a été découvert et nommé en 1931 par Harold Urey, lui ayant remporté un prix Nobel en 1934. Cela a suivi la découverte du neutron en 1932, ce qui a rendu la structure nucléaire du deutéron évidente. Peu après la découverte du deutérium, Urey et d'autres ont produit des échantillons d'eau lourde dans lesquels le deutérium a été fortement concentré par rapport au protium.
