La dévaluation dans la politique monétaire moderne est une réduction de la valeur d'une monnaie par rapport à ces biens, services ou autres unités monétaires avec lesquelles cette monnaie peut être échangée. La «dévaluation» désigne l'abaissement officiel de la valeur de la monnaie d'un pays dans un système de taux de change fixe, par lequel l'autorité monétaire fixe officiellement un nouveau taux fixe par rapport à une devise de référence étrangère. En revanche, l'amortissement est utilisé pour décrire une diminution de la valeur d'une monnaie en raison des forces du marché, et non pas des mesures de politique gouvernementale ou de la banque centrale. Dans le deuxième système, les banques centrales maintiennent les taux en hausse ou en baisse en achetant ou en vendant des devises, généralement mais pas toujours USD. Le contraire de la dévaluation est appelé réévaluation. L'amortissement et la dévaluation sont parfois incorrectement utilisés de manière interchangeable, mais ils se réfèrent toujours à des valeurs par rapport aux autres devises. L'inflation, d'autre part, se réfère à la valeur de la monnaie dans les biens et services. La modification de la valeur nominale d'une monnaie sans réduire son taux de change est une redéfinition, non une dévaluation ou une réévaluation.

Devaluation in modern monetary policy is a reduction in the value of a currency with respect to those goods, services or other monetary units with which that currency can be exchanged. ‘Devaluation’ means official lowering of the value of a country's currency within a fixed exchange rate system, by which the monetary authority formally sets a new fixed rate with respect to a foreign reference currency. In contrast, depreciation is used to describe a decrease in a currency's value due to market forces, not government or central bank policy actions. Under the second system central banks maintain the rates up or down by buying or selling foreign currency, usually but not always USD. The opposite of devaluation is called revaluation. Depreciation and devaluation are sometimes incorrectly used interchangeably, but they always refer to values in terms of other currencies. Inflation, on the other hand, refers to the value of the currency in goods and services. Altering the face value of a currency without reducing its exchange rate is a redenomination, not a devaluation or revaluation.
