Dichotomie
Une dichotomie est le fractionnement d'un ensemble dans exactement deux parties qui ne se chevauchent pas, ce qui signifie que c'est une procédure dans laquelle un tout est divisé en deux parties. Il s'agit d'une partition d'un ensemble en deux parties qui sont: ▪ conjointement exhaustives: tout doit appartenir à une partie ou à l'autre, et ▪ mutuellement exclusif: rien ne peut appartenir simultanément aux deux parties. Une telle partition est souvent appelée une bipartition. Les deux parties ainsi formées sont des compléments. Dans la logique, les partitions sont opposées s'il existe une proposition telle qu'elle se détient sur l'une et non sur l'autre. Le traitement de variables continues ou de variables multiconoriques comme variables binaires s'appelle dichotomisation. L'erreur de discrétisation inhérente à la dichotomisation est temporairement ignorée à des fins de modélisation.
