En mathématiques, une fonction propre d'un opérateur linéaire, A, définie sur un espace de fonction, est une fonction z non nulle dans cet espace qui retourne de l'opérateur exactement tel quel, à l'exception d'un facteur de mise à l'échelle multiplicatif. Plus précisément, on a pour certains scalaire, λ, la valeur propre correspondante. La solution du problème de valeur propre différentielle dépend également de toutes les conditions limites requises pour f. Dans chaque cas, il n'y a que certaines valeurs propres λ = λn qui admettent une solution correspondante pour f = fn lorsqu'elles sont combinées avec les conditions aux limites. Les fonctions propres sont utilisées pour analyser A. Par exemple, fk = ekx est une fonction propre pour l'opérateur différentiel pour toute valeur de k, avec la valeur propre correspondante λ = k2-k. Si des conditions limites sont appliquées à ce système, alors seules certaines valeurs de k = kn satisfont les conditions aux limites, générant des valeurs propres discrètes correspondantes.
