Englishry ou Englescherie, est un nom légal donné, sous le règne de William the Conqueror, à la présentation du fait qu'une personne tuée était un Anglais. Si un homme inconnu a été trouvé tué, il a été supposé être un Norman, et les cent ont été condamnés à une amende en conséquence, à moins qu'il ne soit prouvé qu'il était anglais. L'anglais, s'il était établi, excusait la centaine. On pense que les envahisseurs danois ont d'abord introduit la pratique en Angleterre et que les conquérants normands l'ont conservé et l'ont relancé. Le Dr W. Stubbs suggère que de telles mesures pourraient avoir été prises par King Canute. Mais il n'y a pas de preuve directe de cette date antérieure à celle du traité juridique du 13e siècle, Bracton.
