Un moteur à combustion externe est un moteur thermique où un fluide de travail est chauffé par combustion dans une source externe, à travers la paroi du moteur ou un échangeur de chaleur. Le fluide alors, en développant et en agissant sur le mécanisme du moteur, produit du mouvement et du travail utilisable. Le liquide est ensuite refroidi, comprimé et réutilisé, ou déversé, et du liquide frais introduit.
