Une erreur est un argument qui utilise un raisonnement médiocre. Un argument peut être fallacieux, que sa conclusion soit ou non vraie. Une erreur peut être formelle ou informelle. Une erreur qui découle d'une mauvaise forme logique est parfois appelée une erreur formelle ou simplement un argument invalide. Une erreur informelle est une erreur de raisonnement qui ne provient pas d'une forme logique incorrecte. Les arguments consistant à commettre des erreurs pénales informelles peuvent être formellement valides, mais toujours fallacieux. Les failles de la présomption ne prouvent pas la conclusion en supposant la conclusion dans la preuve. Les failles d'inférence faible ne prouvent pas la conclusion en raison de preuves insuffisantes. Les failles de la distraction ne prouvent pas la conclusion en raison de preuves non pertinentes, comme l'émotion. Les failles de l'ambiguïté ne parviennent pas à prouver la conclusion due au vague dans les mots, les phrases ou la grammaire. Certaines erreurs sont commises intentionnellement, d'autres involontairement en raison de l'insouciance ou de l'ignorance.
